As I was researching for a school project, I found a very interesting
article about Canadian etiquette, then I found something even more
interesting, read the screen shot from the article below, and see if
anything "gender role-ish" catches your eye.
If you didn't find it, I'll give you a clue. The last sentence of the article was: "Women may give toasts." Wait, excuse me, back up there, what? Women may give toasts? What, we have to ask permission before we give a toast now? Why is it that the author of the article needed to use the word "may" at all? Why does it need to made clear if women can give toasts? Shouldn't they have that right in the first place?
This shows that gender roles are everywhere in the world, not just in the US. This article was about Canada, after all. Humans all around the world have the same mind set, that is why gender roles are everywhere. Humans think alike. It doesn't matter where you live.
All it takes is for someone to say something about a gender, pass it along to someone else, and then it's like a new trend, it's suddenly everywhere you look, because now you know what you're looking for.
This type of gender role I think is something that just reflects everyday life. It's something that happened, nobody created it, it simply came to be. I think that over time, while although the idea of this being a gender role might fade, the act of a man or a woman toasting is just something that would happen, and nobody would give it another thought.
