Ah, the good ol’ gender role. Maybe one of the
biggest stereotypes in our society today. What is a gender role anyway?
Well, think about this: What is the definition of a women in our
society?
Here’s a list:
- Someone who takes care of the kids
- Makes dinner
- Makes lunch
- Makes breakfast
- Goes grocery shopping
- Takes the kids everywhere
- Washes the dishes
- Does the laundry
- Watches sappy romance movies and reads sappy romance novels
- Can’t drive as good as any man
- Doesn’t know how to use technology
Do I need to go on? Those are just a few of the stereotypes against women in our society.
Now, lets look at the definitions of a man in our society:
- Likes technology
- Likes cars
- Likes action
- Loves football
- Goes to work
- Is the best driver
- Man of the House
- Knows everything
- Is always right
Like I said, those are just some of the stereotypes we have today, but were gender roles always in our society? Or are they just a fabrication of our minds? I think that there is no such thing as a gender role, it’s merely something that us humans came up with ourselves. Think about it, if you weren’t so absorbed in society, if you actually did live under a rock, would you even know what a gender role was? No, of course you wouldn’t. The only reason gender roles even exist is because we want them to. We created gender roles. Sure, girls love to play with dolls and maybe some of us do read sappy romance novels, but whose to say boys can’t do that do? If we hadn’t imprinted that image of a women so much in our heads, we wouldn’t even have gender roles.
Although some gender roles are just common sense, or just something that tends to relate to one gender more than the other, there are some gender roles that are just ridiculous. For example, why is it that men think they are better drivers than women? Why is it that women are always nurses, and for a man to be one is an act of embarrassment? I think the answer to that is, whenever a majority of a gender does something more than the other, that becomes a gender role. The majority of nurses are in fact female, and that is why it is so strange for a man to become one.
Gender roles definitely change over time. In the 1900’s, women always wore skirts and dresses and high heels, all of that fancy stuff. It was strange and improper for a woman to wear pants during that time. But as time went on, society changed, and I am thankful to say that I am allowed now to wear pants.
In each page of this blog, I will be showing some examples of different gender roles that are prevalent in our society today.
